An earthquake is a sudden and short ground shaking caused by rock collapse (collapse earthquake), magmatic activity (volcanic earthquake) or tectonic disturbances (tectonic earthquake). The hypocentre of an earthquake is a space within the Earth where the layers of the Earth's crust move and cause a sudden release of energy, which is then transmitted through the Earth by earthquake waves. The epicentre is a place on the Earth's surface where the earthquake is most strongly felt and where it causes the most damage. Consequences of an earthquake are panic and insecurity, fear of destruction, injuries and death. Everyone will face many challenges throughout their lives, and earthquakes are just one of them. Whether these challenges will break or strengthen a person depends on one’s resilience. Resilience implies a combination of different abilities, traits, skills and attitudes that enable children and adults to cope with life's challenges successfully. Resilience is built within the family, and then upgraded through experiences and connections with peers and other important people in a child’s life. Children should be taught about earthquakes and other natural disasters from an early age. Ecavuation drills should be conducted regularly in kindergartens and schools.
